I’m Areeb Bajwa, a Senior at Brookfield Academy in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Chess and I had a rocky relationship when I was growing up. When I was forced into my school’s chess club at 5 years old by my mom, I wasn’t keen on learning the game. At first, I thought the medieval-themed chess pieces were toys, which pried my attention away from the knowledge-packed lessons, but after a few stern lectures from the chess instructor, I became willing to learn and soon realized the magic and joy chess could bring to me.
Ever since then, I have played in countless tournaments, allowing me to create new friendships while satisfying my uberly-competitive nature. I was able to participate and find success in these tournaments because of my coach, whom my parents provided for. Having a private instructor is considered a luxury nowadays, and when Krish approached me with the idea of providing free lessons to kids who need them, I pounced on the opportunity. I joined Power of Pawns to help kids like me discover this amazing game of chess and pass it on to generations to come.
